A day trip to Salzburg …
One day is without doubt too little time to get to know Salzburg properly. What remains after this day is nothing more than a first impression. But: The city has made a damn good first impression on me. Therefore, here are 5 small but nice Salzburg tips – perfect for your day trip!
1. walk along the quay
What is more beautiful than starting the day in the fresh air on the banks of the Salzach?
A walk along the Josef-Mayburger-Kai, to Elisabethkai and finally to Giselakai gives you a good first feeling for the city.
If you follow the quay, you will arrive directly at the Mirabellgarten. A detour is worthwhile!
2. take the lift to the Mönchsberg
Almost a must: From above you simply see more!
From the Mönchsberg you have a magnificent view over Salzburg – a city that confirms its’ many clichés (= stuffy and touristic) but also surprises (= immigrant melting pot and open-minded student city).
The lift leads through the rocks to the Museum der Moderne.
3. Vitalbistro LeichtSinn
In the afternoon I recommend a stop at the Vitalbistro LeichtSinn. Here you can get super tasty snacks and drinks – organic of course 😉 What makes the bistro so nice apart from its relaxed nature: The window front where you can sit down and watch the hustle and bustle on the street.
4. surfing at the Almkanal
Riversurfing is also very popular in Salzburg. And even if the Eisbach in Munich is a bit colder and the waves bigger and wider, the principle remains the same: The community is open-minded.
Even if you are not so interested in surfing, a trip to the Almkanal is highly recommended. The valley and the view of the mountains guarantee pure happiness. Along the canal one can easily walk and look into other people’s gardens. You can find the surf wave near the bridge Weidenstraße.
By the way: If you are used to the Munich Eisbach and therefore think that you can surf the Almkanal with your left hand, you are wrong! The situation is (once again) completely different… but above all the stream is much flatter! So you better approach this (mini)-wave with respect. Anyway, I hit my knee so hard that I couldn’t ride any wave for two weeks.
5. dinner at The Green Garden
Perhaps the best restaurant in Salzburg! I have rarely eaten such a delicious vegan menu. Simply fantastic! Also: Give the cucumber gin a try.
